Tom and chilli

My fondest memories of Tom seem to involve food and the way he loved it. When he and Kathy were together they'd often appear (mysteriously) at mealtimes and Tom would always square up to the weird concoctions we dished up. I remember his first meal out with us at the Raj - he ordered the hottest meal on the menu with extra chillies... 'Are you sure Tom? You don't have to.'... as he broke into a sweat at the first mouthful. But Tom was sure and downed every last chilli - a young man with a mission to take it to the limit with his own unique mix of bravado and vulnerability. We were always pleased and a bit relieved to see them when he and Kath emerged late morning to cook breakfast - often (strangely) involving chilli! We had good talks over food. Tom was hungry to find out about the world out there - a thinker and explorer with his own quirky take on things. He stayed cool through the most heated discussions in our hormonal teenage household. He seemed worldly wise but at times he could also remind me of a much younger boy - the way he held his fork in his fist, smacked his lips and rubbed his tummy when he was full with a .. 'mmm, tasty!' Once we were discussing our 'best meals ever'. Tom chipped in... 'My best meal ever - Mum's roast - no contest!' Tom, we miss you! Caro xxx
